Generative compositions using basic visual shapes and musical notes.
This project is an attempt to discover unique compositions generated by an algorithm which employs a degree of randomness as a part of its logic. The variables are eight basic visual shapes and the seven basic musical notes.
I have written a term paper that illustrates the entire design process behind this project.
Here is the abstract and below you will find a link to read the entire paper. Please contact me to get access to full paper.
In his famous book "Epic of Evolution: Seven Ages of the Cosmos", Eric Chaisson shares a profound thought on randomness and determinism - "The two go hand in hand like a dance: chance flirts with necessity, randomness with determinism. To be sure, it is from this interchange that novelty and creativity arise in Nature, thereby yielding unique forms and novel structures." As human beings we always crave for order, but little did we know how random is the world and nature around us and that by some miracle of chance and coincidence we get to see something yet unseen. Set in a conversational style this paper is an attempt to find unique compositions generated by an algorithm which employs a degree of randomness as part of its logic. The variables focussed in this paper are the eight basic visual shapes and seven basic musical notes. Guidelines are provided on how to extend this framework to other variables like colour and motion. To create these random compositions using shape and sound, a good understanding of the two domains - Generative Art and Paper Electronics is required. This paper deals with those fundamental principles and provides a detailed account on how to create one such composition.
